9 Tips for taking photos with smartphones

  • Get to know auto-mode

Knowing how shooting in a smartphone camera works can help you take good photos. When using high ISOs, the shutter speed is automatically adjusted in their settings. If you know the shutter speed, you can adjust the image accordingly. This helps you know when automatic mode is difficult to take a photo, and if necessary, you can ignore the automatic settings and adjust the camera for your photo.

  • Ignore the assumptions

It is best to set the settings to automatic, but as we said, these settings do not always work properly. Especially if you are at home on a day without sunlight, with the automatic mode it seems unlikely that you can take a good photo. If you think that the camera cannot balance the white color, most smartphones usually allow you to adjust these parameters to your liking and the amount of light in the environment. In addition to adjusting the white balance, many smartphone cameras allow you to fine-tune the colors.

The best manual settings allow you to manually adjust the shutter speed and blur in images. Normally a longer shutter speed less than 1.5 seconds per second requires a steady hand, know this to be able to make adjustments correctly. On iPhone cameras, older iOS require more light to take pictures, but the latest  ISO can shoot with far less light.

  • Do not shake the camera and hold it fixed

A key way to reduce image blur is to know how to hold your smartphone camera consistently. Keeping your arms open and outstretched can cause you to slip when taking pictures, but if you hold your elbows toward your body, you stabilize your arms, much like putting your smartphone on a stand. If you want complete stability, you can make a tripod connection and insert your smartphone into it.

  • Never zoom digitally

Everyone used to say never zoom in on a smartphone camera. Of course, this is no longer the case, many phones like the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy Note have secondary lenses that can double the magnification and can provide optical zoom without compromising image quality. But we are talking about all smartphones.

When you zoom in before you take the picture, you can no longer make the changes you want after you take the picture. You can take a higher quality photo without zooming in and then crop any part you do not want. Taking a photo without zooming gives you more flexibility to edit the photo after taking it.

  • Take a few photos

There is enough space on your smartphone, so you can take as many photos as you want. So it’s worth taking a few shots in a row, especially when photographing dynamic objects such as people, pets, cars, and so on. Taking a few photos allows you to choose the best photo later. Of course, not all smartphones support the ability to take multiple photos in a row, leaving a gap of several seconds between one photo and another.

  • Do editing

One of the most important things you can do to make your photo look good on your smartphone photography is good editing. Your photo has all the details and information recorded, but it may not look good to you or it may be full of slips. This problem is easy to fix, edit the photo in a photo editing program on your mobile or even your computer. It may be hard for you at first and you do not know what each option will do in the photo editing program, but if you practice a little, you will be able to do everything and maybe you will become a professional.

  • Take photos in RAW format

Taking RAW photos is related to the previous point which was editing. DSLR users have been using RAW mode for photography for years to help with the editing process, so if you are serious about editing, use RAW mode for photography instead of JPG.

For those who do not know RAW, RAW is an image format that captures raw (raw) data by the camera. When shooting in JPG format, a white balance is created at the end of the image and details are lost in the compression process, allowing us to edit with the open hand. The RAW format provides more details and allows you to edit your photo as much as you want.

  • Pay attention to the lighting

If you are serious about a smartphone photography, your photos must be clear. Small sensors installed on smartphones are not capable of shooting when light is dim. If you can hold your camera with ISO 200 or lower, you will see fewer grains in the final image and the photos will be sharper.

  • Know when to use portrait mode in smartphone photography

Portrait mode attempts to simulate the increase in a blur, which DSLR cameras have with wide-aperture lenses. In many cases, this is achieved through an additional sensor that provides in-depth information. Phones like the Google Pixel, however, can simulate blur through smart edge detection without additional hardware.

Of course, portrait mode does not always work well, and in some cases, portrait mode cannot do the simulation properly. The important thing in taking portrait mode is to know exactly what portrait mode is and what problems it may cause.
