How to Work with a Perspective

While we often talk about ‘correcting’ perspectives, it is not always a bad thing in photography. Photographers use everyday perspective to add image aesthetics and make it more appealing. Good perspective control is what makes a great photographer’s work stand out from the norm because they have been practiced and understand how object relationships can influence the audience.

Perspective photography Control With Lenses

People often believe that wide-angle lenses exaggerate perspective photography while telephoto lenses compress it. This is not true.

Wide angle lenses only create the illusion of an exaggerated perspective. This is because there is a greater distance between the object in the wide angle picture and the object closest to the camera will appear larger.

With a telephoto lens, the distance between objects shrinks, thus causing the object size difference to be reduced. Photographers can use these differences to their advantage. For example, landscape photos become more interesting when photographed with objects in the foreground. While this object will look larger in a wide-angle lens, it also adds depth and scale to the image and allows the viewer to get a true picture of the space in the landscape.

 

With telephoto lenses, photographers can confuse the audience by making two objects of different sizes look closer to the same size. For example, by standing a fair distance from a 2-storey building and placing someone in the correct position between the camera and the building, the photographer can give the illusion that the person is as tall as the building.

Perspectives from Different Angles

Another way photographers can use perspective to their advantage is to give the audience a different view of the object they are familiar with. By taking pictures from a lower or higher angle, you can give the viewer a new perspective photography that is different from their normal eye level view. These different angles will automatically change the relationship between the subject of the scene and add interest to the photo.

For example, someone might pick up a cup of coffee as if you were sitting at a table and it might be a nice image. Looking at the same coffee cup from a lower angle, say the same as the table itself, the relationship between the cup and the table has a completely new look. The table now takes you to the cup, making it look bigger and more attractive. We don’t usually see this scene in it that way and that adds to the appeal of the image.

Correcting Perspectives

Fun as perspective photography is to play with, sometimes you have to correct perspective. This becomes a factor when you need to capture the subject as accurately as possible without distractions or illusions. Perspectives can cause certain problems for photographers when shooting buildings, as this will seem to shrink to a point at their apex. To combat this problem, the photographer uses a special “tilt and shift” lens, which is included under the flexible that allows the lens to be tilted gradually to correct perspective photography effects. As the lens is tilted in line with the building, the lines will move separately from each other and the dimensions of the building will appear more precise. When not looking through the camera, our eyes will still see the converging line, but the camera will not.
