6 Main Types of Fashion Shows

A fashion show is an event put on to showcase the varying designs by Designers. In a typical fashion show, models walk the catwalk dressed in the clothing created by a designer. The clothing is illuminated on the runway by the lighting.
A fashion show is an event where designer clothing is showcased on multiple models who walk down a catwalk. These models are typically chosen based on their appearance, body type, and how well they fit into the pre-selected clothing. The audience is normally seated; required to dress according to a dress code; and may even be offered transportation to the show, alcoholic beverages, and dinner.

A fashion show’s clothing is generally the best the designer has to offer, kept in pristine condition throughout the show, and then sold or stored. These events have been taking place since the early 1900s, but the clothing, models, and the type of places the events are held has changed.

The order in which each model walks out wearing a specific outfit is usually planned in accordance to the statement that the designer or Fashion Show Producer/Director wants to make about the collection.

It is then up to the audience to not only try to understand what the Designer or Fashion Show Producer/Director is trying to say by the way the collection is being presented, but to also visually deconstruct each outfit and try to appreciate the detail and craftsmanship of every single piece.

Occasionally, fashion shows take the form of installations, where the models are static, standing or sitting in a constructed environment. A wide range of contemporary designers tend to produce their shows as theatrical productions with elaborate sets and added elements such as live music or a variety of technological components like holograms, for example.

However, the main concept of Fashion Shows is for those who present them to understand the history of Fashion Shows.

In general, fashion show clothing is not tailored to fit the model; rather, the model is selected to fit the clothing. Therefore, a model’s chance of being selected to model depends on his or her body and how the designer believes the fashion piece should fit. Backstage, models are dressed, and sometimes heavy makeup is applied for a dramatic appearance.

Once they model an outfit, they return backstage to have it removed and, when modeling more than one outfit, are prepped to walk the catwalk again. The removal and application of makeup and complex outfits can take a while, so it is common for fashion shows to start late or run longer than expected.

A Fashion Show is a Visual Novel that has varying chapters (Scenes or Segments); that are cohesively enjoined to highlight the over-riding theme or focus of the Fashion Show.

If there are multiple designers, they each should showcase a multiple of seven (7) outfits, ensembles, pieces or looks.

For a complete presentation it is recommended to show fourteen (14) looks. That way the Designer’s Chapter (Scene or Segment) has a beginning, middle, and conclusion.

Paco Rabanne’s spring 2019 collection was presented in a traditional runway setting and had an instant translation to sales, an increasing rarity in the world of luxury fashion.

Additionally, when you have a Fashion Show with multiple designers you want to be at least four Chapters (Scenes or Segments) deep. Meaning everyone is on deck ready to start the Fashion Show that will flow without any sizable breaks longer than 5 seconds.

There is much more to doing a Fashion Show than simply having models walk back-and-forth down a runway.

Depending on the popularity of a fashion show, the audience might have paid a significant amount of money to be there. Front-row tickets are often very expensive and sometimes come with dinner afterward, transportation in luxury vehicles, and beverages during the show.

Fashion editors tend to frequent popular shows and may carry a notebook to jot down notes about new trends. Likewise, photographers from fashion magazines might also be in the audience to capture photos for an upcoming edition.
